Somewhere in my 2017 goals, I should have added, "start a new project". I'm good at starting quilt projects. This one is my first EPP hexie quilt, but my second hexagon quilt. I do not have a picture of my first hexagons quilt. I remember it quite fondly. I had just finished my first quilt, a sampler, and wanted to try out these templates I had bought from Walmart. I went out and bought fall fabrics. I sat at my ironing board in my college apartment, and traced out the hexagons. I used to use the lines as my sewing lines. I did not have a rotary cutter or sewing machine, just my hands. At that time I took the project to work with me at Publix, so i could work on it during my break. The grocery manager allowed us to use his desk in the back room. Somewhere along the night, someone threw out the project, never to be seen again. I think about this quilt often. I only had 2 short rows done, but still.
Now it has been 15 years, and this past a Sunday, I saw an EPP grandmother's garden quilt at the fair. That quilt hit home. I knew I had to do this on our coming up trip. I could hand quilt my Celtic solstice, but I don't want to carry a bulky item on the plane. I thought about doing yo-yo's. I'm on the fence, but might still. I then got the idea to assemble hexies. I found directions a while back for using a Cricut to cut EPP shapes. The directions were for several shapes. Yesterday I printed off 3 pages on hexagons...72 to be exact. I then went through my cart, where my fabi is and found the hexagons I had previously cut. I made one and perfect. So during the flight I'm just going to baste the layers. Seems doable.
On a final note regarding the fair. I also had this weird feeling to submit a quilt to the county fair. I was quite disappointed when we walked into the art hall, and there were only 3 on display. However, there was one man sewing a quilt, another man handquilting a quilt on a frame. Then a group of women, with a treadle that had a hand crank added to it. It was sad that of these people, the youngest was approximately in their lower-mid 60's. There has to be more quilty people in this county, with the Amish population being so high. Just sad. I guess I have to be the weird person who quilts for a bit longer.
