Six years ago, my oldest child was in 2nd grade in Utah. The teacher sent a note home asking each student to bring in a half yard of fabric that resembled the night sky or a solid. Being a quilter, I was super excited, and ran to Joann's. I bought the yardage of 2 fabrics, and let him choose when he got home. He chose a navy blue with gold stars. I had no clue what he needed fabric for, nor did I question it. I never question a trip to purchase fabric. Just before Halloween, he came home with a small wall hanging quilt of a pumpkin patch and a ghost. I absolutely loved it! While he was at school one day, I let my then 3 year old make one with the other fabric. He wanted square, green pumpkins. I let him pick out the fabrics for his pumpkins. I use wonder under, and let him help me iron it to the fabric he chose. I cut out his pumpkins, and he placed them on his fabric. I then had him help attach it. I let him cut out his faces and stems for each pumpkins. Every year I put these wall hangings up in the living room.
My youngest was only a year old when we made these wall hangings, but I had in my mind that he would make one, as well. The years passed, and we had some rough years. This wall hanging just never had time. This year, I decided was the year, it was going to get down. See, he is now in 2nd grade, and several months ago I had purchased a yard of this fabric from the remnant bin for cheap! Cheap as in $3 a yard cheap!
When I purchased this fabric, I thought it was the small print solar system, and not this obnoxiously large print solar system. He started cutting his pumpkins, and they were small. I wasn't sure how I was going to cover up these giant planets, so I ignored the fabric. He drew his stars, and I cut them out....larger than he drew them. He also wanted ghosts, so I had to hand draw those. Everything was out and ready to go. I just needed fabric to put them on. I measured the other wall hangings and they measure at 14x14. I made a mental note of where that fell on my mat. I folded and adjusted this fabric for a good portion of my Sunday. I finally figured out a way to cut it, so I didn't have the distraction of the solar system. I then had him place the units down. I'll admit it doesn't look too bad. Loud, but not awful. Only thing left to do is decorate the pumpkins with faces and stems.
Also, I managed to mostly finish a one block wonder quilt top. It is a tiny quilt. Just perfect for practicing free motion quilting, if I ever purchase batting and a backing for it. I just need to add borders, and figure out what I am doing with the edges. I thought I had extra triangles, where I could just add pairs in the blank spaces and cut those, but I have no clue where I put those triangles. I'm not entirely sure if I like this quilt top. In person, I dislike it, unless I am looking at certain blocks. On the other hand, I love to look at the picture of it. No matter what I think I may just call it "Whirligig" I pressed it open, and hung it up in the closet, until I can finish it.

Couldn't do anything about Saturn |
