Last weekend, my husband and I made the trip to my dad's place to pick up a treadle sewing machine, and help with his yard sale. This is Mariucci. She is a 1909 Singer Model 27 Sphinx. Rumor has it that this machine used to belong to my great grandma Mariucci, and has been passed down since.
Let me just say, that this machine is a hot commodity. I had so many people asking questions:
"Did Leslie pay for this already?"
"How much did Leslie pay for the machine?"
"Are you willing to take more on the machine?"
Ummm...NO! Leslie paid nothing for the machine. It is also a family heirloom, that is being passed down. Some people couldn't even take that for an answer.
When we made it home Saturday night, I instantly started messing with the machine, and cleaning it. Let me just say that this is a process, and I wish I took more before pictures. The only before picture I have of the entire machine is the one above, and the one below. It was a grimy mess. However, Chloe, instantly approved. She was quite neurotic with the movement of furniture.

It is missing a cover on the back.
Here are some before and after pics as I was cleaning. I took pictures, so I knew how the pieces would go back on. I have also been working on one section at a time.
Tension before. Remember that brown, I'll reference it again.
Tension after.
The face plate. It was brown as the the tension. I ended up using baking soda and peroxide to get a majority of the grime off. Then switched to oil.
Check out that grime. That needle was practically glued on.
After....and checking the pictures to make sure I got it on correctly.
The needle. Yes, I used a wrench to pull it out. I prayed that the needle would not break inside the machine. That griminess next to the picture was holding it in tight!
I have only one major piece that needs to be removed and cleaned...the presser foot lever. It will not budge. I have been greasing it with sewing machine oil each day, hoping it will soon loosen. After that I will clean out the bobbin case and under the machine. I just know that those will be easy.
