Oh, the borders!

I finally finished the center of the quilt...2 weekends ago.
Orange Peel center 85x85

I am having a hard time finding an outer border.  The blue and yellow print in some of the blocks matched perfectly.  Unfortunately, it is no longer made, and i have about a half yard left.  I searched for another border.  I couldn't find anything to match.  I had an a-ha moment on Thursday: I am going to do a piano key border with the same fabrics.  No, make that a braid!  So, I head out to Walmart and JoAnn's to get the fabric. I bought the yellow, a gray, and the other print in the quilt. I also have another grey print and another yellow left, as well.  not bad!  Then, it hit.  I cannot find any of the blues.  I check the website, and they are out too.  Those fabrics have been discontinued.  However, there are still some prints in that navy blue that are similar to the other prints that can fill in.    I have faith, it will all work out.

I also had to sew patches onto cub scout uniforms, which means, I got to make four patches.  I have enough to make 30 16-patch blocks, and still have a quite leftover. I hate storing wound bobbins, because I don't have a place to store them.  I just use the thread up, then store them empty.

In other news, I will be getting an early inheritance of a treadle sewing machine.  My dad is downsizing and relocating, and offered for me to pick it up this weekend.  I am stoked! The machine originally belonged to my great grandmother.  My grandmother always sewed on it when I was a  child.  I have memories of playing the the wheel as a child and being intrigued by it.  When my grandmother downsized in the late 1990's, it was given to my mom. It has been used as a decorative table for years, and has been missing a belt.  However, whenever I would visit my dad, I would open it up, and hand crank the wheel periodically, so I know it is not frozen.  I have been spending time researching how to clean the machine, as well as looking at belts to get it back into working shape.
